India-EU trade deal: US Treasury Secretary very disappointed with India-European Union trade agreement

India-EU trade deal: The US has described the Europeans as very disappointed in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) and said that they were not ready to support Washington in imposing taxes on New Delhi for buying Russian oil due to this trade deal.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said in an interview with CNBC's 'Squawk on the Street' on Wednesday, "Again, they should do what is best for them, but I will tell you that I find the Europeans very disappointed because the Europeans are on the front lines of the Ukraine-Russia war."

Besant was responding to a question about the big trade deal between Europe and India and the threat it poses to the US, as these countries are moving forward with free trade without Washington.

He said, "India started buying banned Russian oil, and guess who was buying the refined product? The Europeans. So, the Europeans are funding a war against themselves and this is something you couldn't have imagined. The US imposed a 25 percent tariff or embargo on India for buying Russian oil. The Europeans were not ready to join us, and it turns out they wanted to do this trade deal. So, whenever you hear a European talking about the importance of the Ukrainian people, remember that they have put trade ahead of the Ukrainian people. Trade — European trade, is more important than ending the war in Ukraine."
