Explainer: From 'Vande Mataram' to 'Self-reliant India': Know why the 77th Republic Day is special?

Republic Day 2026- India's 77th Republic Day is not just a national event, but a symbol of the country's historical journey and future vision. This year, Republic Day 2026 is being celebrated with great pomp on the Kartavya Path, as this time the national song 'Vande Mataram' is also completing 150 years. This event reflects India's journey from freedom struggle to self-reliance. A special tribute dedicated to the national song 'Vande Mataram' will also be given during the parade this time, which will further strengthen the spirit of patriotism.

'Vande Mataram' was composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875 and became the voice of the struggle against the British Raj during the Swadeshi Movement of 1905. It was first published in the novel 'Anandamath' in 1882. Rabindranath Tagore sang it for the first time in 1896 during the session of the Indian National Congress. This song instilled a sense of sacrifice and patriotism by presenting the country as a mother. It was given the status of national anthem by the Constituent Assembly on 24 January 1950. This year, the Ministry of Culture's tableau will showcase the historical journey of 'Vande Mataram' from its original manuscript to its creation.
