End of an era in journalism: Legendary journalist Mark Tully passes away

Mark Tullu Death: Veteran journalist Sir Mark Tully, who brought India's history to the world with his pen and voice, passed away on Sunday at the age of 90 at Max Hospital in New Delhi.

Born in Kolkata on October 24, 1935, Tully had been ill for some time. His close friend and senior journalist Satish Jacob confirmed the sad news. Mark Tully served as the BBC's Delhi Bureau Chief for nearly 22 years and presented the complex layers of India to the world with great simplicity.

He is especially remembered for his unparalleled coverage during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, which was the biggest source of authentic information for the Bengalis fighting for independence at that time. Known for his quiet but powerful voice, Tully was not just a journalist but an institution in itself, whose reporting was clearly reflected in impartiality, honesty and deep compassion for the people.
