Canada: Investigation launched into the case of an Indian who died due to lack of treatment in a hospital

The Health Department has formed a committee to investigate the real causes of death of Prashant Sri Kumar (44), an Indian-origin man who was admitted to Edmonton’s Grey Nun Community Hospital due to chest pain due to lack of timely treatment. Health Minister Matt John said that Acute Care Alberta and Covenant Health, under whose supervision the hospital is being run, will jointly find out the real causes of the person’s death.

He said that if anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken against him and such arrangements will be made so that this does not happen in the future.

Virender Bhullar, a close relative of the victim’s family, said that while working in his office in the afternoon, Sri Kumar suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest. His colleague took him to the hospital by car, where nurses repeatedly checked his blood pressure, which was continuously increasing. But no doctor started his treatment.

According to Bhullar, after suffering for 8 hours in the emergency room due to severe pain, Mr. Kumar’s heart stopped beating. He expressed his grief and said, “It is often said that it was God’s will, but in this case, his friend has died directly due to the negligence of the doctors.”

Alberta Premier Daniel Smith, while expressing his condolences to the victim’s family, has said that a full investigation will be conducted into the cause of death. It is worth noting that Acute Care Alberta has taken over the responsibility of the province’s health department a few months ago. The Chief Medical Examiner is investigating the matter on his own. Local MLA Jasvir Deol, calling the incident a “terrible tragedy”, has demanded major improvements in the provincial health services from the Chief Minister.
