Rolls-Royce plans major expansion in India: Focus on jet engines and naval systems

British engine maker Rolls-Royce on Sunday said it is planning to make India its third home market outside the UK, to tap opportunities in areas such as jet engines, naval propulsion and land systems.

In an interview, Rolls-Royce India Executive Vice President Shashi Mukundan said the company is preparing for a "major investment" in India and its top priority is to develop the next-generation fighter jet engine for India's 'Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft' (AMCA) programme.

Apart from the UK, the US and Germany are currently the only markets where Rolls-Royce has manufacturing plants. According to Mukundan, the company will also sign two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with two Indian defence public sector undertakings (PSUs) for engines for Arjun tanks and future combat vehicles. He said that Rolls-Royce is ready to transfer designs and technology to India, which will give India joint intellectual property (IP) rights and this technology will also help in making naval engines.
The company believes that India's policy clarity and growing industrial capacity make it a strategic hub, making India not just a market but a strategic home for Rolls-Royce in the coming times.
