  A gas explosion in a coal mine in China has killed 82 people, an official media report said. The gas explosion occurred at 7:29 p.m. Friday at the Liushenyu coal mine and rescue operations are ongoing.

The death toll from the coal mine accident in Qinyuan County, north China's Shaanxi Province, has risen to 82, with nine people still trapped underground, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued instructions for a comprehensive rescue operation and treatment of the injured.

He has called for a proper handling of the aftermath of the accident and called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident, holding those responsible accountable in accordance with the law. Xi stressed that officials across the country should learn from the accident, remain vigilant about workplace safety, and step up efforts to identify and eliminate potential hazards to prevent major accidents.
