6.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Borneo Island

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the island of Borneo early on Monday.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 633 kilometers (393.33 miles) below the surface, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). Due to the depth of the earthquake, there is usually little chance of damage at ground level, but authorities are still monitoring the situation.

Experts say the depth of the earthquake is very shallow (633 kilometers), so there is no risk of a tsunami in the sea. Tsunamis usually occur when the epicenter of the earthquake is close to the ocean surface.

So far, there have been no reports of major casualties or property damage from the northern coast of Borneo (Malaysia or the Indonesian part). Earthquakes at such a depth are felt very lightly on the surface.
