Canada New Citizenship Bill: What is Canada's new citizenship bill, how much will it affect Indians? Know the details

Canada is about to make significant changes to its citizenship law. Recently, a new citizenship law bill was introduced in Parliament by Canadian Immigration Minister Lena Metlage Diab. It is known as C-3. It is being told that this bill removes the current limitation on citizenship based on ancestry. It was introduced in the Canadian Parliament on Thursday. The new bill attempts to correct the errors present in the previous law.

What does the current law say?

Canada's current citizenship law states that no Canadian citizen born outside Canada will be able to pass on their citizenship to their child born abroad. In fact, this law was introduced in Parliament in 2009. This law states that citizenship by ancestry was limited only to the first generation born in Canada. A new law has been introduced in Canada to correct this error.

The new law states that parents must show a sufficient connection to Canada. Therefore, it will be necessary to be physically present in the country for at least three years before the birth or adoption of the child.

Earlier, only the first generation was given citizenship

It is said that according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), due to the first generation limit of citizenship by descent for people born outside Canada, most Canadians who are citizens by descent cannot give citizenship to their child born or adopted outside the country. Due to this law of Canada, people are facing many problems.

These people will get direct benefit of this bill

If the new bill is passed by the Canadian Parliament, then many people are going to benefit from it. In recent times, US President Trump has tightened immigration policies. Amidst this decision of Trump, this bill being brought by the Canadian government has proven to be beneficial for Indian immigrants and other immigrant communities. Let us tell you that on January 20 this year, Donald Trump had terminated the birthright of children born in the US to parents on temporary visas like H-1B and F-1.
