Trump loyalist Kash Patel fired as ATF acting director

FBI Director Kash Patel has been removed from his post as acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). He has been replaced by U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll.

Driscoll will continue to serve as Army secretary while overseeing the ATF, a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice, sources said. Patel was sworn in as acting ATF director in late February, just days after he was sworn in as FBI director.

A Justice Department official confirmed the change. It is not clear when Patel was removed from his post. Patel’s picture and the title of acting director were still listed on the ATF website as of Wednesday afternoon.

Sudden change

The sudden change in leadership comes as senior Justice Department officials are considering merging ATF with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Directorate in an effort to cut costs.
