Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is on a four-day state visit to Japan, where he was accorded a warm welcome, including a royal dinner. The visit sends a clear message that Tokyo is eager to strengthen ties with the country it sees as a key defense partner and major arms customer amid fears of China's military activities in Asia. Marcos's visit will end with his return tomorrow. During the visit, he met Emperor Naruhito yesterday, who awarded him one of Japan's highest honors, the 'Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum'. Today, Marcos held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sane Takaichi, during which they agreed to further strengthen cooperation in defense, arms and other areas. The two countries are strengthening their military ties, keeping China in mind. Addressing the upper house of the Japanese parliament, Marcos said his country and Japan have chosen to cooperate, forgetting the scars of Japan's wartime aggression. Marcos said there is "great potential for deeper cooperation" in defense, economic security and other global challenges.
