Toll plazas will be barrier free, vehicle tax will be collected without stopping: Gadkari's big announcement

Digital Desk, New Delhi: Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said that a seamless tolling system will be implemented on several national highways across the country by December without any hitch.

Addressing the second edition of Logistics Shakti Sammelan and Awards 2026, Gadkari said that India needs to develop better infrastructure to reduce logistics costs. "We are planning to set up a seamless tolling system on several national highways across the country by December," Gadkari said.

How will the system work?

This new system facilitates seamless tolling by using integrated technologies, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with AI analytics and RFID-based Electronic Toll Collection (FASTag).

Under this, vehicles will be charged without stopping at toll plazas based on identification through high-performance ANPR cameras and FASTag readers. Violators will be sent e-notices for non-compliance. Failure to pay these notices may result in suspension of their FASTag and other vehicle-related penalties.

Logistics costs must be reduced to make India a global power'

Gadkari said that if India wants to become a global power, the country will have to reduce logistics costs to single digits. He said that a recent report prepared by IIT Chennai, IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore has shown that the construction of expressways and economic corridors in India has reduced the country's logistics cost from 16 percent to 10 percent.

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways said that logistics cost in the US is 12 percent, in European countries 12 percent and in China 8-10 percent. Citing the West Asia crisis, Gadkari said India is dependent on imports to meet 87 percent of its oil needs.
