Big relief to online gaming companies, Supreme Court stays GST notice worth Rs 1 lakh crore

  Online gaming companies and casinos have got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has stayed the show cause notices issued in tax evasion cases of more than Rs 1 lakh crore.

The notice was issued in 2023
The central government amended the GST Act on October 1, 2023. Under this, registration in India was made mandatory for foreign online gaming companies. In October 2023 itself, the GST department had issued show cause notices to online gaming companies. These companies were accused of tax evasion.

Opposition to 28% GST
In August 2023, the GST Council clarified that 28 percent GST will be levied on the entire amount of betting on online gaming platforms. Gaming companies filed petitions in various high courts against this decision of the GST Council.

After this, the Center filed a petition in the Supreme Court. Later, the Supreme Court transferred all the petitions challenging the 28 percent GST from nine high courts to itself. These petitions were heard on Friday.

Order to stay all proceedings
Additional Solicitor General N Venkataraman presented the GST department's side in the court. He said that some show cause notices will expire in February. The bench said that these cases need to be heard. It also said that all proceedings against gaming companies should be stayed.

Several online gaming firms like Games 24x7, Head Digital Works, Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports had filed a petition in the court.

Bogies brought to the track with the help of a crane
Late night, the bogies of the goods train were rescued and brought to the railway track and the goods train was sent forward. According to information, when the goods train moved forward from Malpur railway station at around 11:45 pm, four bogies of the goods train derailed.
