  The CBI's application to summon complainant Akash Batta as the next prosecution witness in the corruption case involving suspended Punjab Police DIG H.S. Bhullar has been approved. This approval was granted by the CBI court in Chandigarh, presided over by Special Judge Bhavna Jain. In the application filed through Public Prosecutor Narinder Singh, the CBI stated that the alleged corruption case is currently pending before the court and that the statements of prosecution witnesses are being recorded in accordance with the law. For this purpose, recovery witness Rajkumar has already been summoned for September 24, 2026. It was stated that complainant Akash Batta is a key witness in the matter and his testimony is crucial for the proper adjudication of the case. The prosecution has already named Akash Batta as a witness in the charge-sheet filed before the court. Therefore, his interrogation is essential to establish crucial facts of the case, including the circumstances leading to the complaint, the demand for a bribe, the preliminary inquiry, the pre-trap proceedings, the trap operation itself, and the receipt and recovery of the bribe amount. The CBI stated that the bail matter concerning the accused, H.S. Bhullar, is also pending before the Supreme Court of India via a Special Leave Petition (SLP). A partial hearing on the bail matter took place in the Supreme Court on September 15, 2026, and it has been directed to be listed again on October 27, 2026. During the Supreme Court hearing, the counsel representing the CBI was orally instructed to ensure that the examination of the complainant, Akash Bhatta, is completed by the scheduled date of September 24, 2026, prior to the examination of the recovery witness, Raj Kumar. In view of the aforementioned instructions and the fact that the matter is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court on October 27, 2026, it is requested that the complainant, Akash Bhatta, be summoned and examined on the previously scheduled date of September 24, 2026. S.P.S. Bhullar, the counsel for the accused, raised no objection to this application. After hearing the arguments, the CBI court allowed the CBI's application and granted permission to summon the complainant, Akash Bhatta, as the next prosecution witness. The FIR in this case was registered based on a complaint by Akash Bhatta, alleging that Bhullar—who was then posted as the DIG of the Ropar Range, Punjab Police—had demanded a bribe through an intermediary, Krishanu Sharda. The bribe was sought in exchange for providing relief regarding an FIR registered at the Sirhind police station and ensuring that no harsh action was taken against the complainant's business.
