Poverty alleviation is not just a slogan, but a firm commitment: Narender Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appreciated the World Bank's report on the fastest poverty reduction in India. In a post shared on Instagram with the song 'Than Liya' from Bollywood film 'Daswini', Modi said that this historic decline in poverty represents a huge increase in opportunities. Taking a dig at the decades-old 'Garibi Hata' slogan of the Congress, he said that for his government, eradicating poverty is not just a slogan, but a firm commitment.

Referring to the World Bank's October 2026 report, he said that between 2011 and 2023, 49.6 crore people have come out of poverty. With this, the extreme poverty rate has fallen by 90 percent to just 2.6 percent in 2023 compared to 27.1 percent in 2011. Earlier, where one out of every four Indians was poor, now this figure has reduced to one out of 38.

He said that 13.4 crore new jobs have been created in just six years, which is double the growth of the working population. The Gini Index, which measures economic inequality, has also fallen by more than 20 percent to 23.0. It may be mentioned that the song used in the post is sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Tanishka Sanghvi. This song from the 2022 Abhishek Bachchan and Yami Gautam film 'Daswini' conveys the message of a jailed politician passing the 10th and overcoming difficulties through hard work.
