India's ambitious fifth-generation stealth fighter, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), is now moving closer to reality. Seven leading Indian companies have submitted bids for the prototype design and development of this state-of-the-art fighter aircraft in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The mega project is estimated to cost over ₹2 lakh crore and could be inducted into the Indian Air Force by 2035. With this acquisition, India will join a select group of countries like the US, China and Russia that operate fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Which companies are in the running Companies like Larsen & Toubro, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Adani Defence are in the running. Two of these companies will be shortlisted and ₹15,000 crore will be allocated to build five prototypes. A committee headed by former BrahMos Aerospace chief A. Sivathanu Pillai will evaluate the bids and submit its report to the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry of Defence will give the final approval. What is AMCA The AMCA will be India’s first fifth-generation fighter aircraft. It will be a single-seat, twin-engine stealth aircraft. It will have updated stealth coating and internal weapons bays, similar to those seen in the US F-22, F-35, and Russia’s Su-57. The jet will be able to fly at an altitude of 55,000 feet and can carry 1,500 kg of weapons in internal bays and 5,500 kg of weapons externally. It will also be capable of carrying 6,500 kg of fuel. There will be two versions of the AMCA. The first version will use the American GE F414 engine, while the second version will have an indigenously developed, possibly more powerful engine. This supermaneuverable and stealthy multirole fighter aircraft will provide better performance and control on the battlefield.
