Geopolitical Tension: Hormuz Strait Deal Deal Setback

  Iran’s top National Security Council has said the Strait of Hormuz will not open until the US “corrects its behavior.” The statement has set back talks on a deal to manage the waterway.

Iran’s state broadcaster quoted the council’s secretary, Mohammad Bagher Zoelghader, who is also the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, as saying that the US should never threaten Iran and should permanently end the war with Iran and its armed allies in the region. The US should lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw its forces from the region. Iran should be “compensated” for the losses caused by the war, sanctions should be lifted and frozen assets should be released “unconditionally.” The US had no immediate comment. Meanwhile, Iran said it was close to reaching a separate agreement with Oman to manage the waterway. On the other hand, United Arab Emirates officials said Iran had fired a missile at a cargo ship belonging to an Abu Dhabi-owned oil and gas company. There were no casualties in the attack.
