The US President Donald Trump administration has received a setback from a lower court. A federal judge in Maryland ruled late Thursday that the Trump administration cannot block the citizenship of children born to people who are illegal or temporarily residing in the country. This is the fourth court decision since a landmark US Supreme Court decision in June related to birthright citizenship. US District Judge Deborah Boardman made the ruling. Boardman had issued an initial injunction in February to block Trump's order nationwide. Boardman ruled that all children born in the US after February 19, 2025, who may be affected by Trump's order, have the right to citizenship. However, in June, the Supreme Court had said that lower courts generally cannot issue nationwide injunctions but had not overturned other court orders.
