Colombo: The Ministry of Defense of Sri Lanka said on Wednesday that at least 16 of its former soldiers have been killed in the Russia-Ukraine war. They were fighting a war on behalf of Russia and Ukraine. They were lied to and taken away by the foreign employment agency. The Ministry of Defense said that they will bring back their citizens who are in Russia and Ukraine. Minister of State for Defense Premita Bandara Tenakoon said that there are 288 citizens of Sri Lanka in total in both countries. Sri Lanka is in contact with both countries to bring back its citizens. The local police claim that an Indian agent Ramesh is also working to send the Sri Lankans. Tenakoon said it is a human trafficking operation, where ex-servicemen pass through third countries to reach the war front. Earlier this month, a retired major general and a sergeant were also arrested for their involvement in such smuggling in the northwest region of Kurunegala.
