Breaking News: Sonam Wangchuk's detention ends; Government lifts restrictions imposed under NSA

Sonam Wangchuk Detention: The central government has announced the immediate end of the detention of Ladakh's renowned environmental activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk. The Home Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the decision has been taken to create an atmosphere of peace, stability and mutual trust in the region.

Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in September 2025 in view of the serious law and order situation in Leh, and has completed half of his detention.

The government clarified that the continuous bandh and protests in Ladakh were having a negative impact on the economy, tourism and education of students there. According to the Home Ministry, the government is committed to constructive dialogue with various communities to ensure the interests and constitutional security of Ladakh. It is hoped that now the burning issues of Ladakh will be resolved through a high-level committee, which will allow normalcy to be restored in the border area.
