Impact of monsoon: Heavy rains in some parts of Telangana

  Various parts of Telangana received heavy rains today due to the impact of the dangerous cyclonic storm 'Montha'. The storm had crossed the coast of the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh last night. The word 'Montha' means 'fragrant flower' in Thai.

In Telangana, Warangal, Jangaon, Hanumankonda, Mahbubabad, Karimnagar, Siddhipet, Yadaraadi Bhuvanagiri, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Khammam, Bhadraadi Kothagudem, Nagarkurnool and Patiala districts recorded heavy rains while Hyderabad also received heavy rains. A 48-year-old man died after a tree fell on the roadside in Suryapet district. During this, several areas were waterlogged.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, Kalleda in Warangal district recorded 348.3 mm of rainfall, Redalwara 301.8 mm and Kapulakanparthi 270.3 mm. On the other hand, Bhimdevarapalli in Hanumankonda district recorded 253.5 mm of rainfall. The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorm and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph at some places in Warangal, Hanumankonda, Mahbubabad, Jangaon, Siddhipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rajanna Sirkila and Karimnagar districts. According to the Meteorological Department, a red alert means that more than 20 cm of rainfall is likely to occur in a period of 24 hours. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy today directed the state administration to be on high alert in view of the heavy rains caused by Cyclone 'Montha'. A holiday was declared in all educational institutions in Khammam, Bhadradi Kothagudem and Mehboobad districts due to heavy rains. Around 500 students and 26 teachers and other staff were shifted to safety after a state-run residential school in Komapalli in Nalgonda district was flooded.
