Trump government is preparing to tighten H-1B and L-1 visa rules, know which countries will be affected?

Preparations to tighten the H-1B and L-1 visa programs in the United States have intensified. Three US senators have introduced two separate bills to address loopholes in these visa rules. The changes are reportedly aimed at protecting the interests of American workers and preventing abuse of foreign workers. This could have a significant impact, especially on Indian IT companies, which rely heavily on these visas.

The top Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Chuck Grassley (Iowa), and Democratic Senator Dick Durbin (Illinois), have introduced a bill. The bill focuses on raising minimum wages and hiring standards, making public job advertisements mandatory, and further tightening visa eligibility.

Grassley said the H-1B and L-1 visas were intended to allow companies to bring in talent that is unavailable in the United States, but many employers are abusing them by preferring cheap foreign labor.

Is this a move to protect American workers?

Durbin explained that many large companies are laying off thousands of American employees and filing visa applications for foreign workers with low wages and poor conditions.

He argues that this is unfair to American workers and that the broken immigration system needs to be fixed. The bill is inspired by legislation proposed in 2007, which was supported by Senators Tommy Tuberville (Alabama), Richard Blumenthal (Connecticut), and independent Senator Bernie Sanders (Vermont).

Republican Senator Tom Cotton (Arkansas) has introduced a separate bill. It focuses on preventing universities, research institutions and non-profits from hiring unlimited foreign workers. Cotton says universities are abusing these visas to bring in “wake-up and anti-American” professors, which should be stopped.

Major changes to H-1B: End lottery system, introduce salary-based selection
H-1B visas are used primarily to recruit skilled workers from India and China. Last month, President Donald Trump increased the application fee for this visa from the current $215 to $100,000.

In addition, there is a proposal to end the current lottery system and implement a salary-based selection process. Under it, workers earning the highest salaries ($162,528 annually) would receive four “lottery tickets,” while workers at the lower levels would receive fewer.
