'The work of extracting oil from the sea will start in mission mode', PM Modi made a big announcement from the Red Fort

Over the past two decades, the drive to find oil and gas reserves in the domestic sector has not shown very encouraging results. India imports 87 percent of its total oil consumption.

In such a situation, in his speech on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations from the Red Fort on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to start the work of finding oil and gas reserves under the deep sea on mission mode.

In recent times, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has indicated the discovery of large hydrocarbon reserves in the Andaman and Nicobar region, in view of this, Prime Minister Modi's announcement is being considered very significant.

At present, India is buying a lot of oil from Russia for its needs, due to which relations with the US are deteriorating. The attempt to become self-reliant in oil and gas production is also being linked to this.
