Sunita Williams will celebrate Thanksgiving in space, NASA has made these special arrangements

Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is all set to celebrate Thanksgiving in space with ‘smoked turkey, mashed potatoes’.

Sunita Williams to celebrate Thanksgiving Day in space

“Happy Thanksgiving from our team here on Earth to all our friends, family and everyone who supports us,” Williams said in a video message shared by NASA on Wednesday.

The astronauts said NASA provided them with foods like butternut squash, apples, sardines and smoked turkey for the occasion.

In a recent interview with NBC News, Williams shared her plans to celebrate the day with other astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) – Butch Wilmore, Nick Hague and Alexander Gorbunov.

Plans include watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and having a lavish feast with “some smoked turkey, some cranberries, apple cobbler, green beans and mushrooms and mashed potatoes.” In June, Williams and Butch Wilmore became the first people to ride the much-delayed Starliner being developed by Boeing.

Long-term in space

Williams and Wilmore’s eight-day stay in space has now turned into eight months after NASA declared the damaged Starliner unfit for human travel.

While the Starliner has safely returned to Earth, Williams is expected to return to Earth in a SpaceX Dragon capsule in February 2025.

Amid concerns about their long-term stay in space, NASA recently said that both Williams and Wilmore are safe on the space station. Williams also said she is feeling good, working out and eating right.
