  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held official talks in New Delhi today. During this high-level meeting, discussions focused on key topics such as achieving a bilateral trade target of $100 billion by 2030, enhancing industrial cooperation, and civil nuclear partnership. This meeting at Bharat Mandapam took place just one day before the 18th BRICS Summit. These talks occurred against a backdrop where India continues to strengthen its strategic partnership with Russia, despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and mounting pressure from Western nations. Highlighting India's cultural heritage on this occasion, Prime Minister Modi presented Russian President Putin with a Russian translation of the 'Thirukkural'—the celebrated work of the great Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. Comprising 1,330 couplets, the book eloquently portrays ethics and various facets of human life. The meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for Saturday at Bharat Mandapam, will be the primary focus of attention. This marks Xi's first visit to India in seven years—following the border incidents of 2020—and is viewed as a significant step towards easing tensions in the relationship between the two nations. Despite the Russia-Ukraine war and pressure from Western nations, India continues to uphold its strategic partnership with Moscow. Eleven member countries are participating in this summit: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and India. India has positioned BRICS as a strong voice for the 'Global South' rather than as an anti-Western bloc. During this three-day summit, Prime Minister Modi will hold meetings with several world leaders. On Saturday, he is scheduled to meet Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung. Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu will also hold a separate meeting with the Iranian President. On Sunday, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with the Presidents of Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Egypt, and South Africa, as well as with senior leaders from Burundi, Nigeria, and Uganda. This packed programme will play a significant role in advancing India's economic, strategic, and diplomatic priorities.
