US Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave an important piece of information on Sunday. According to him, the talks between the US and Iran to end the ongoing war in the Middle East are moving in the right direction, which includes fully opening the Hormuz waterway for commercial shipping. Rubio, who was talking to reporters here after holding in-depth discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, said that there could be some "good news" in the next few hours. He hinted that an official announcement in this regard could be made by US President Donald Trump himself. Responding to a question, the US Secretary of State said, "On the issue of Iran, I believe that some more information may come out later today and I leave the decision to share the next thing on that to the President (Trump)." Rubio did not go into much depth, but only said that the plan to resolve this dispute has received a big response in the talks held in the last 48 hours. The biggest obstacles in the ongoing peace talks between the US and Iran are Iran's nuclear program and control over the Hormuz waterway (sea route). Let us tell you that in normal days, about a fifth (i.e. about a quarter) of the world's energy supply (oil and gas) passes through this important route. The US Secretary of State said that there has been "significant progress" in the talks with Iran, although no final decision has been made on this yet. He said, "I remind everyone that the ultimate goal is that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. Iran can never have a nuclear weapon." He said, "The discussions held with our partners in the Gulf countries on a roadmap in the last 48 hours have received a great response. If this effort is successful, it will not only completely open the 'Strait of Hormuz', but I mean ships will be able to travel through this sea route without any tax (toll)." At the same time, S Jaishankar said that both India and the US have a very strong interest in ensuring that there is safe and unhindered maritime trade. He said, "We also have a great interest in keeping oil and gas (energy) prices under control around the world and making energy resources more accessible to all." It is noteworthy that the US Secretary of State's comments came after Trump spoke on the phone with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain and Pakistan on Saturday to discuss the regional situation and ongoing peace efforts. Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir was in Tehran late Saturday for talks with senior Iranian leaders, aimed at intensifying efforts to secure a "decisive agreement" between the US and Iran.
