Elon Musk's threat to halt SpaceX's use of the Dragon spacecraft for NASA could be a major setback for the space agency and the Pentagon. It could deprive the agency of the only American vehicle to carry astronauts to the International Space Station. The threat comes amid an escalating battle between the world's richest man and President Donald Trump, who has threatened to cancel all federal contracts for Musk's company. However, hours after the threat, Musk said, "Okay, we're not going to shut down Dragon." The Washington Post reported that cutting ties with NASA could also create problems for the Pentagon and intelligence agencies, given the importance of many of SpaceX's federal programs. SpaceX has been playing a key role in releasing sensitive national security payloads in the past few years. NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens did not say how NASA would get its astronauts to the space station without SpaceX if Musk actually did so. She said only that NASA would continue to work on the president's vision for the space program. Tesla shares rose 4 percent during the controversy, after a $152 billion selloff.
