US Removes 'Mr. Singh' Self-Deportation Ad

  The US Department of Homeland Security removed a *Transformers*-style advertisement urging "Mr. Singh" to self-deport on Thursday, following backlash from Indian-American groups and Democratic leaders.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had used AI-generated images on X to promote its campaign against unlicensed commercial drivers; the images depicted a brown-skinned man with a beard alongside the tagline: "Get off our roads, you don't know how to drive, Mr. Singh." The advertisement sparked strong opposition from Indian-American and Sikh advocacy groups and drew criticism from Democratic leaders, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. Newsom's press office stated in a post on X, "This is appalling. The Trump administration is engaging in racist propaganda targeting the Sikh community."

Advocacy groups such as the Hindu American Foundation, the Sikh Coalition, HinduAction, and the Coalition of Hindus of North America also condemned the advertisement as un-American and racist.

Indian-American advocacy groups welcomed the DHS's decision to remove the advertisement.

The Hindu American Foundation said, "The DHS has now removed the post we spoke out against yesterday. We welcome its removal. However, when a federal agency uses a racial caricature of an Indian/Sikh individual to make a political point, removing the post is merely the first step."

The HAF stated, "Indian Americans, Sikhs, Hindus, and South Asians deserve better from their government."
