Guri Chahal Case: Police accused of not initiating fresh probe into Amritsar rape case despite court orders

  Punjab News: It has been more than a month since the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the Punjab Police to conduct an impartial probe into the alleged kidnapping and rape of a woman from Amritsar, but the victim’s family has alleged that a fresh probe has not been initiated yet.

The 27-year-old victim had accused Mohali-based social media influencer Gurvinder Singh alias Guri Chahal, originally from Gurdaspur, of kidnapping and raping her on the pretext of marriage. The incident also sparked a political controversy, with the opposition alleging that the Chief Minister’s wife had taken bribes to suppress the case. However, she denied these allegations.

The case was initially registered on April 29, 2026 at the Civil Lines police station on the complaint of the victim’s father. (BNS) was registered under Section 137(2) and the rape sections were later added after recording the victim’s statement.

The High Court in its July 20 order had directed the DGP, Punjab, to conduct an investigation under the supervision of the Special Director General of Police, Women Affairs, Punjab. It also ordered that a senior gazetted police officer, who was not previously associated with the case, be appointed as the investigating officer.

The newly appointed officer was directed to independently examine the material collected so far and conduct the investigation in an impartial, unbiased and expeditious manner.

However, the victim’s family has alleged that despite the court’s order, no fresh investigation has been initiated yet. Speaking to the Tribune, the victim’s father said, “So far, no officer has approached us to join the investigation.”
