Good news for MBBS students: MBBS seats in the country cross 1.36 lakh

  There is a big and relief news for students aspiring to study medicine. The total number of MBBS seats in India has crossed 1.36 lakh. This time, compared to the year 2025, there has been an increase of 7 percent in the seats. According to the official data (seat matrix) released by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the academic year 2026-27, a total of 1,36,939 seats will now be available in 823 medical colleges in the country. Last year (2025-26), there were 1,28,976 seats in 818 colleges, which means that there has been an increase of 7,963 seats this time.

Details of seats in government and private colleges Out of the total 1,36,939 seats this year, 1,27,028 seats are old (under renewal system) and 9,911 new seats have been added. The college-wise details are as follows:

Government Medical Colleges (441 colleges): Total 63,296 seats (61,185 old + 2,111 new seats)

Private Medical Colleges (382 colleges): Total 73,643 seats (65,843 old + 7,800 new seats)

Note: These figures do not include seats in prestigious institutes (INIs) of the country such as AIIMS, JIPMER Puducherry and PGI Chandigarh. These central institutes together offer around 2,900 seats.

25 new colleges launched This time, 25 new medical colleges have been opened in the country, with 2,400 brand new seats added. These include:

7 new government colleges: 400 seats

18 new private colleges: 2,000 seats

The newly opened major colleges include Alwaz Institute of Medical Sciences (Karnataka), A.P.S. Medical College (Tamil Nadu), Sikkim Government Medical College, Sidho Kanhu Medical College and Hospital (Jharkhand) and Sanskaram School of Medical Sciences (Haryana).
