60 countries including India discuss opening Strait of Hormuz

India today stressed the need to reduce tensions in the Middle East at a 60-nation summit hosted by Britain to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. India said the crisis was costing the world a human and strategic price. Representing India at the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said India was the only country whose sailors had been killed in attacks on merchant ships in the Gulf. He outlined New Delhi's position on the security of international shipping in the region.

The talks, led by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, focused on ensuring safe passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has partially closed the waterway following attacks on Iran by the US and Israel. The closure of the strategically important waterway has affected global oil and gas supplies.
