Supreme Court seeks Centre's response on plea seeking regulation of air fares

  SC seeks replies from Centre, others on plea to control unpredictable fluctuations in airfaresThe Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre and others on a plea seeking guidelines to control sudden reduction and increase in airfares and other charges of private airlines in the country.

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea filed by social activist S Lakshminarayanan. The plea sought the establishment of an independent regulator to ensure transparency and safety of passengers in the civil aviation sector. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notices to the Centre, Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India to file their responses on the plea and adjourned the matter for hearing after four weeks.
