Ruby Dalla: Who is Ruby Dalla, who could become Canada's PM; What is her view on India?

  Indian-origin Liberal Party leader Ruby Dhalla could be sworn in as Canada's prime minister. If she does, she will become Canada's first black female prime minister. Ruby Dhalla is a self-made businesswoman, doctor and three-time MP. She believes that under her leadership, Canada can better deal with the challenges it faces. She has raised the issue of the country's ever-increasing housing costs, crime rates, food prices and threats of tariffs from the US.

Ruby was born into an immigrant family

Ruby was born to immigrant parents in the city of Winnipeg, about 2,000 kilometres from the Canadian capital Ottawa. She has achieved many achievements through her hard work.

She said her life speaks volumes about the opportunities available in Canada. She also credited Pierre Trudeau, father of current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for opening Canada to immigrants in the 1970s.

Called Canada a great country

She said, "My mother came to Canada in 1972. Whatever I have achieved here is because of hard work and desire, and also because Canada is a great country."

She stressed the importance of strengthening ties between India and Canada in view of the large number of Indian immigrants in Canada. She said Canada should engage with other countries, including India, to mitigate the impact of US tariffs.

Joined at the age of 14

Ruby has been working with the Liberal Party since the age of 14. Her leadership campaign is focused on rebuilding the Liberal Party and Canada. Her slogan is - 'Canada's comeback begins now.'

Ruby said she wants to build a competitive economy that supports business, entrepreneurs and young people. She said she wants to restore Canada's reputation on the international stage.
