The operation to arrest illegal immigrants has reached gurdwaras in America.

The crackdown on illegal immigrants has intensified since Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. In a recent development, law enforcement officers from the US Department of Homeland Security have started visiting gurdwaras in New York and New Jersey to detect the presence of illegal immigrants and apprehend them. This has drawn a sharp reaction from some Sikh organizations as they consider such actions a threat to the sanctity of their religion.

It is believed that some gurdwaras in New York and New Jersey are used as ‘sanctuaries’ by Sikh separatists as well as illegal and undocumented immigrants. It is noteworthy that within hours of Trump’s inauguration, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Huffman rescinded the Biden administration’s guidelines that allegedly did not allow operations in or around ‘sensitive’ areas. These ‘sensitive’ areas included places of worship such as gurdwaras and churches. Immigration, Customs and Border Protection enforcement operations were not allowed here under the Biden administration.

Kiran Kaur Gill, executive director of the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund, has expressed serious concern over the revocation of guidelines that declared places of worship as ‘sensitive areas’. The organization said in a statement that the reports of officials visiting gurdwaras in New York and New Jersey are disturbing. Gurdwaras are not just places of worship, they are important community centers that provide support, nourishment and spiritual peace to Sikhs and a larger community.

Raids in schools and churches, arrests also begin

According to the New York Times, the US Department of Justice has said that it has begun arrests as part of a multi-agency enforcement operation in Chicago. Vice President J.D. Vance has also supported raids on schools, saying he hopes it will have a deterrent effect on illegal immigrants coming into our country. Raids on places of worship and schools should not be avoided.
