Centre to decide on Rajoana's mercy plea by March 18: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the central government to decide by March 18 on the mercy plea of death row convict Balwant Singh Rajoana. Rajoana was sentenced to death in the 1995 murder case of then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the centre, “We are giving you time by giving you a last chance. Either you take a decision or we will hear it on merits.”

The bench also includes Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice KV Vishwanathan. The bench was hearing Rajoana’s plea seeking commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment on the grounds of undue delay in disposal of his mercy plea. At the beginning of the hearing, Mehta, citing the sensitivity of the matter, said that the mercy plea is under consideration. He requested the bench to give him six weeks’ time. While Rajoana's lawyer argued before the bench that his client has been in jail for nearly 29 years.
