Government procurement target of 30 million tonnes of wheat, Agriculture Ministry predicts potential of 115 million tonnes of wheat production in 2024-25

The government has set a target of procurement of three crore tonnes of wheat for the Rabi season 2025-26. The Ministry of Agriculture has projected a record production of 115 crore tonnes of wheat in the Rabi season 2024-25. In this regard, the government's wheat procurement target is much lower. Wheat sowing has been almost completed in many states, with an area estimated to be 31.9 crore hectares. The current crop situation for wheat is being said to be favorable. According to sources, this target of government procurement has been fixed after discussions with the food secretaries of the states.

The minimum support price (MSP) of wheat for the Rabi season 2025-26, starting from April, has been fixed at Rs 2,425 per quintal. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and government agencies procure wheat to ensure MSP of Rabi season crops to farmers and to meet the needs of welfare schemes. In the financial year 2024-25, the government wheat procurement was 26.6 million tonnes, higher than the target of 30-32 million tonnes. It was 26.2 million tonnes procured in the financial year 2023-24, but it was less than the target of 34.1 million tonnes in that year. Earlier, in the financial year 2022-23, the government procurement of wheat was only 18.8 million tonnes, which is much less than the target of 44.4 million tonnes.
