Hardeep Singh Nijjar Case: This has reached the limit, Canada spewed venom using PM Modi's name; India reprimanded

  New Delhi: (India Canada Relations) India on Wednesday strongly condemned a Canadian media report, which claimed that the Indian Prime Minister was aware of the alleged conspiracy to kill Sikh terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, terming it a smear campaign. The report was published quoting an unnamed official.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that such ridiculous statements should be rejected. He said, "Such a smear campaign further damages our already tense relations." Jaiswal was responding to media queries about a report published in the Canadian newspaper 'The Globe and Mail'.

What was claimed in the report

The newspaper has quoted information received from a senior national security official in the report. The report claims that India's National Security Advisor and Foreign Minister were also aware of the conspiracy. India-Canada relations soured last month after Canada accused Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and some other diplomats of murder.

India strongly rejected all allegations leveled by Canada in the case and later recalled the High Commissioner. Following Canada's allegations, India expelled Canada's Charge d'Affaires Stewart Wheeler and five other diplomats.

Terrorist killed in Canada

In June 2023, he was shot dead by two gunmen dressed in black outside a Sikh temple. However, it is not yet clear who killed Nijjar.

Canada has been consistently accusing India in this regard. Canada claims that Indian authorities are involved in the killing of the terrorist. India has initially denied any involvement in Nijjar's murder. Apart from this, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations have also been called absurd.

Nijjar used to work for Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI. India had demanded Nijjar's extradition several times, but Canada not only granted him asylum but also granted him citizenship.

Nijjar was born in Jalandhar district of Punjab. He moved to Canada in 1997 during his youth. After this, he got married there. He used to work as a plumber in Canada.
