A day after meeting President Droupadi Murmu to demand the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, Rahul Gandhi said today that Gyanesh Kumar would have to go, after which the repair of Indian democracy would begin. Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh stated that the national capital has been turned into a fortress, with armed security forces deployed everywhere. "The Prime Minister-Home Minister duo is extremely nervous and rattled by the peaceful protest of young people who are deeply concerned about the systematic theft of their constitutional right to vote, guaranteed under Article 326. There is evidence that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar faithfully carried out the orders given by this destructive duo at the time of his appointment," he said. Jairam Ramesh stated that the law granting them lifelong immunity was rammed through Parliament in December 2023 at a time when 145 opposition MPs had been suspended. He said, "The resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC)—who has even misled the Supreme Court—has become a moral imperative. However, this is merely the first step toward reclaiming the foundations of our democracy, which is crucial for fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of all citizens, especially the youth." The Congress leader further added that the suspension of the SIR—which has already disenfranchised approximately 14 crore Indians—is essential to restoring public faith and confidence in our electoral system.
