According to a US media report, the Flydubai co-pilot who attacked Indian Captain Samit Machhar and allegedly attempted to destroy the Dubai-Tel Aviv flight on Wednesday has been identified as Omani national Hamam Al-Hammami. Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reported that Al-Hammami had previously been barred from flying by Omani authorities due to his radical ideological views. On Flydubai flight FZ1073, he seriously injured Machhar by stabbing him; the captain fought back and managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers to help subdue the attacker. The flight, carrying 174 passengers, sent out emergency signals and rapidly descended from 34,000 feet to below 17,000 feet before diverting to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in the Saudi Arabian city of Tabuk, where authorities took Al-Hammami into custody. A WSJ report stated, "The alleged attacker is an Omani national named Hammam Al-Hammami." According to the report, he was born to an Omani father and a Syrian mother. On Friday, Machhar spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi by phone, recounting the harrowing moments following the attack and stating that he was fighting for his life but was determined not to let others die. He did not disclose the reason for the attack or the co-pilot's motive. Mashar, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in the United Arab Emirates, was hailed as a "real hero" by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
