The Punjab and Haryana High Court today took suo motu cognizance of the case of 19-year-old Ranjit Singh, who was killed in a police encounter in Gurdaspur district, and after seeking his reply, DGP Gaurav Yadav appeared before the court through video conference in the afternoon. The court issued notice to the Punjab Police and ordered the DGP to file an affidavit regarding the incident. Sukhjinder Kaur, the mother of the deceased Ranjit Singh, filed a petition in the High Court today. A division bench of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Deepak Manchanda expressed concern over the police encounters in Punjab and said, “You cannot sit with your eyes closed. You will have to satisfy us.” The court also said that after examining the police’s reply, it will be decided whether the investigation of the case should be handed over to an independent agency or not. The court told the police, citing the similar circumstances of many police encounters, "You cannot take the law into your own hands and those caught should be dealt with according to the law."
