Foreign tourists are returning to China as the country has relaxed its visa policy to an unprecedented level. Citizens from 74 countries can now enter China without a visa for up to 30 days, a major change from previous rules. The Chinese government has opened up the visa-free door to boost tourism, the economy and its soft power. According to the National Immigration Administration, more than 20 million foreign tourists entered China without a visa in 2024 (about one-third of the total), double the number from the previous year. “It really helps people travel because it is very difficult to apply for a visa and go through the process,” said Giorgi Shavdze, a Georgian citizen living in Austria, during a recent visit to Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. However, at most tourist destinations, the number of local tourists still significantly outnumbers foreign tourists. Travel companies and tour guides are now bracing for a big influx of summer holidaymakers. In December 2023, China announced visa-free entry for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia. Since then, almost all of Europe has been included. Last month, five Latin American countries and citizens of Uzbekistan also got a share, followed by four West Asian countries. The number will reach 75 with the addition of Azerbaijan on July 16. While the US remains their biggest source, accounting for about 30 percent of their current business, European travelers now make up 15-20 percent of their customers, up from less than five percent before 2019. Shanghai-based online travel agency Trip.com Group said the visa-free policy has significantly boosted tourism. In the first three months of this year, air, hotel and other bookings on their website for travel to China doubled from the same level last year, where 75 percent of visitors are from visa-free zones.
