The government is seriously considering enacting a new law to establish a mechanism to promote safe, orderly and regular migration for employment abroad. The proposal comes at a time when the US has deported 104 illegal Indian migrants. The proposed bill, the 'Immigration (Overseas Mobility- Facilitation and Welfare) Bill, 2024', will replace the Immigration Act of 1983. Report tabled in Parliament This has come out in the report of the Parliamentary Committee on External Affairs, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The report was tabled in Parliament on Monday. The committee also said that it wants to set up POEs (Protectors of Emigrants) in states where they are not present at present. The committee says that the opening of additional POE offices in migration hotspot states like Punjab and Uttar Pradesh should be expedited to ensure better access and assistance to migrants.
