Canada- Australia Radar deal: Canada-Australia Radar deal finalised: Security and surveillance of the Arctic region will be further strengthened

Canada- Australia Radar deal: Canada has taken a major step towards strengthening the security and air surveillance capabilities of the Arctic region by finalising an agreement with Australia for the purchase of an ‘Over-the-Horizon Radar’ (A-OTHR) system. This defence deal worth around $2.5 billion was signed late on Sunday night. According to official information, under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, Canada has signed this agreement with the Australian government and BAE Systems Australia. This radar system will greatly increase the ability to identify any movement in the northern airspace in advance.

According to official sources, this project is a very important part of the modernization plan of NATO and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). Its main purpose is to make Canada's air and maritime surveillance capabilities more effective, especially in the Arctic region, where strategic activities have increased significantly in recent years.

Agreement signed in Canberra
Defence Acquisition Secretary Stephen Furr met with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Richard Marles in Canberra to finalize the agreement. An 'industrial benefits agreement' has also been signed, under which a major investment will be made in Canada's local defence industry.

According to defence experts, this over-the-horizon radar system will prove to be a milestone for the joint security structure of NORAD. This advanced technology is fully capable of identifying aircraft, planes and potential missile threats in remote areas much earlier.

3,000 km range, operational by 2029
The transmitter and receiving stations of this new system will be installed in the Kawartha Lakes region of southern Ontario. It is expected that this radar system will become fully operational by 2029. This radar has the ability to monitor closely up to a distance of about 3,000 km. The Canadian government says that this system will play a key role in strengthening the sovereignty and security of the country's northern borders and the Arctic region.

It is worth noting that Prime Minister Carney announced this important partnership with Australia last year, the total cost of which was set at about $ 6 billion. This current agreement relates to the first of two radar units planned for the Arctic. While the second ‘Polar Over-the-Horizon Radar’ (P-OTHR) will be installed in the far north of Canada, although its exact location has been kept completely secret for security reasons. According to the government, this project will not only integrate national security, but also give a new height to Canada’s sovereignty and surveillance power in the Arctic region.
