Canada's new Prime Minister to be announced on March 9, Mark Carney, Chrystia Freeland in race for Liberal leader

The ruling Liberal Party of Canada, led by current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, will elect a new leader on March 9 to become the country's next prime minister. Trudeau resigned from his post on Monday. He will remain in office until a new party leader is elected. Trudeau, 53, has been prime minister since 2015 but was forced to resign due to growing opposition within the party and his declining popularity.

Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra said in a statement that Canada's Liberal Party will elect a new leader on March 9 and prepare to contest and win the 2025 election. The race to elect the Liberal leader includes former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Freeland resigned as finance minister last month. Meanwhile, Indian-origin MP Chandra Arya announced his candidacy for the Liberal leadership. The Karnataka-born Ottawa MP said on X on Thursday that he wants to make Canada a sovereign republic.

Let us tell you that US President-elect Donald Trump is talking about making Canada the 51st province of his country. He has also threatened to impose a 25 per cent tax on Canadian goods. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in the Trudeau government last month over the conflict on this issue. After this, the demand for Trudeau's resignation started increasing. About a third of Liberal MPs were demanding a change in leadership. A recent survey has shown that the Liberals are unlikely to win the next election.

Here is the election outline

According to the Liberal Party, the national board of directors met on Thursday and the election outline was prepared. The party will hold a vote for the party leader on March 9 and announce the new leader on the same day. A candidate has to pay a fee of 350,000 Canadian dollars to participate in the elections. Candidates will have to be announced by January 23.
