WhatsApp shut down 26 lakh objectionable accounts, said - step taken in compliance with new IT Act 2021

  WhatsApp, which owns Meta, said it had banned more than 26 lakh objectionable accounts in India in September. This he has done in compliance with the new IT Act 2021. A company spokesperson said in a statement that as per the IT Rules 2021, a report has been published in September 2022. This user safety report contains the details of the complaints received and the action taken by WhatsApp. Also, the action taken to prevent misuse of this platform has been pointed out. It banned more than 23 lakh accounts in India in August.

According to the IT Rules 2021, major digital and internet media platforms with more than 50 lakh users are required to publish a compliance report. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has notified some amendments to protect the rights of digital citizens. Union Minister Rajiv Chandrasekhar has said that it is necessary to protect the constitutional rights of Indian citizens. The Ministry has implemented the amendments after following a detailed public consultation process involving all stakeholders.
