Confirmation of African swine fever in Dhanula village, appeal to pig farmers to take precautions to avoid the disease

  Chandigarh: Punjab Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said here today that African swine fever has been confirmed in the pig sample sent from Dhanula village of Barnala district, after which the area was declared an affected zone. . He said that three suspect samples were also sent from Sangrur district but all the samples have come back negative.

The Cabinet Minister said that this has been confirmed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) of Bhopal - the national high security veterinary institute.

He said that the area from 0 to 1 km from the epicenter of the disease in Dhanula village has been declared as "Infection Zone" and from 1 to 10 km (9 km) as "Surveillance Zone". No live/dead pig, pig meat or any related material shall be exported or imported from this area. He said that the employees of the department have been instructed to keep a strict vigil in the monitoring zone as well.
