H-1B visa: Order to make social media profiles public

The US government has tightened the screening and verification process for H-1B visa applicants and their dependent H-4 visa holders. Under the new guidelines, all applicants have been asked to keep the privacy settings of their social media profiles public. Indian professionals, especially technology workers and doctors, are the biggest beneficiaries of H-1B visas and they will have to comply with this new order.

The State Department, in a new order issued on Wednesday, said that from December 15, the online presence of all H-1B applicants and their dependents will be monitored. Earlier, students (F, M) and exchange visitors (J visas) were under such scrutiny, which has now been extended to H-1B and H-4 visas. The State Department said that a US visa is not a right but a privilege and applicants are thoroughly scrutinized using all information in the interest of national security. The statement said that every visa decision is a matter of national security.
